The Drums for Schools long clacker is a traditional Indonesian instrument that delivers bright, percussive rhythms with a unique wave-like motion. Larger than the animal clacker, it’s a little trickier to master, but that’s part of the fun – and makes it a fantastic tool for developing focus, timing, and motor skills.
Made from lightweight pine, it produces a lighter, sharper tone than coconut clackers. Its size and engaging sound make it especially popular with children, but it’s also well-loved in classroom ensembles, workshops, and group rhythm sessions.
Hold an end of the clacker in each hand so the wooden panes hang freely. Keep one hand steady while using the other to flick the panes in a wave toward the still hand. When the wave arrives, flick it back the other way to keep the rhythm flowing. For best results, keep the clacker in a straight line – this ensures the wave travels cleanly from one end to the other. With practice, you can create surprisingly complex rhythms.
