The Beatlife Book - Playing and Teaching Samba
2026 Edition!

The Beatlife book is a complete practical guide to learning, playing and teaching samba rhythms in classrooms, workshops and percussion groups. Written by professional percussionists Stuart Hardcastle and Chris Preston, this updated 2026 edition combines clear teaching methods, authentic Brazilian-inspired grooves and downloadable MP3 audio resources to create an accessible and inspiring learning experience for players of all ages.

Designed primarily for teachers and workshop leaders, the book also includes more advanced rhythmic ideas and ensemble arrangements for drummers and percussionists wanting to deepen their understanding of Brazilian music, groove and instrumentation.

Rooted in years of real-world workshop experience, the Beatlife book takes an approachable and inclusive teaching style that focuses on participation, communication and musical feel rather than technical complexity alone. The result is a resource that works equally well for complete beginners discovering samba for the first time and experienced percussionists looking to explore richer ensemble arrangements and authentic Brazilian-inspired grooves.

“I can't say enough about this book. It's well written, it clearly notated, and comes with audio which breaks out tracks that correspond to the various parts in the drumming rhythms. A great learning tool.”

Learn authentic samba instruments and playing techniques

The book introduces the key instruments used in a Brazilian samba bateria, explaining their role within the ensemble, how they are played and how different parts combine to create the distinctive samba feel and swing.

Each instrument section includes practical guidance, playing techniques, musical context and downloadable MP3 examples to help players understand both the individual sounds and the wider ensemble texture.

Explore rhythms, grooves and ensemble arrangements

The Beatlife book features six complete samba and Afro-Brazilian inspired rhythm styles, each broken down into clear, playable parts with both basic and advanced arrangements.

Rhythms covered include: Samba reggae, Samba funk, Ijexa, Ragga, Batucada, & Maracatu

Each groove is supported by step-by-step breakdowns, ensemble arrangements, breaks, notation and downloadable audio demonstrations, allowing players to build rhythms gradually before hearing them performed as complete pieces.

Includes downloadable MP3 audio resources

The 2026 edition includes free MP3 downloads featuring individual instrument demonstrations, rhythm examples, step-by-step learning tracks and full ensemble performances.

The audio resources make the book especially effective for independent learning, classroom teaching and group rehearsal, helping players hear how individual parts lock together to create a full samba groove.

Ideal for schools, workshops and community music projects

The teaching approach is built around accessibility, communication and group participation, making the book ideal for schools, youth groups, music hubs, workshops and community percussion ensembles.

Alongside rhythms and arrangements, the book also includes practical workshop activities, warm-up exercises and teaching games designed to help leaders build confidence, timing and ensemble awareness within a group setting.

A practical and inspiring samba teaching resource

Rather than focusing purely on technical exercises, the Beatlife book encourages players to understand rhythm as communication, movement and shared musical experience. The teaching style is approachable, creative and rooted in real workshop experience, helping complete beginners quickly build confidence while still offering enough depth for more experienced musicians.

Whether you are leading a classroom percussion session, running a samba workshop or exploring Brazilian rhythms for the first time, the Beatlife book provides a structured, engaging and highly musical introduction to ensemble drumming.

A new purchase for school so not used yet but really looking forward to playing some samba music!!

This book is aimed at the beginner AND the teacher - it's written so that a beginner can follow it on his/her own, or a teacher can use it as a teaching aid. It's clearly laid out, easy to understand and provides a good introduction to the world of Samba music. The book covers the various instruments used in Samba, the main styles of Samba (with a brief introduction on each which covers its development & how it should be played), easy to follow breaks for all the instruments (with samples on the CD), and suggested exercises and group activities. A very useful book!
