Derived from the Spanish or Portuguese 'pandeireta' the Brazilian Pandeiro is a small, versatile percussion instrument essential to many South American music forms such as the Samba, Choro or Coco. Different from a standard school tambourine in that it is larger and tune able which creates a much wider variety of sounds.
This particular model from Izzo is traditionally made with a solid wooden frame which encompasses 5 double sets of jingles. The high quality leather drum skin is kept in place via a metal rim which incorporates 5 tuning lugs allowing for minute changes in pitch and tone colour.
There is a certain technique to playing the pandeiro and whilst it can simply be hit you can also create much more rhythmic complexity but using your thumb, wrist and fingers - it really can be like a small drum kit and its worth seeking out videos or tutorials online which can help you get the best out of this small drum.
Here at Frederick Hyde we are proud to be the sole importer for Izzo. Their factory, based in Sao Paulo, has been producing high quality instruments for nearly 60 years and they provide the back bone of our samba offering.
