This coconut thumb piano is crafted from a halved coconut shell and fitted with steel keys. Played using both thumbs, it produces a gentle, calming sound that works beautifully in any key. Ideal for children exploring music or adults seeking a meditative experience, this instrument encourages rhythmic improvisation, making it virtually impossible to hit a wrong note!
Playing the thumb piano
To play a Mbira, hold the instrument in both hands with your fingers wrapped under, and your thumbs freed up to play the metal notes which are facing with the long ends towards you. Brush your thumbs downwards in a firm stroking action so that the notes resound.
