This classic "talking" drum with goatskin head is a West African instrument whose pitch can be regulated by changing the tension in the stringing whilst playing. It is sometimes called a calling drum or gangan, and features black and white cotton stringing for pitch-bending. Supplied with curved beater and standing at a compact 40cm tall, this talking drum makes for an excellent addition to the primary or secondary classroom.
The playing style of the Talking Drum is based largely upon producing long and sustained notes by hitting the drum head with the stick-holding hand. The accompanying free hand is then used to dampen and change tones immediately after the drum is struck. The resulting sounds are used to communicate at a distance and for this reason it is said that the drum ‘talks’.
