These Drums for Schools hand carved djembe are ideal for getting African drums into the classroom affordably, and are supplied with a free wooden drumstick and an Early Years “Good Practice Guide”. The drums are quite small, but they are working drums and not toys, making a surprisingly good sound!
Excellent for young children, they can be handled easily and carried around by the string handle, but can also be played by older children and even grown-ups, either with the free wooden drumstick or with the fingertips. Being small, they make a higher pitched sound than bigger drums, and so can be a useful addition to a bigger djembe collection.
Each drum is made by hand using traditional materials and techniques. The wood is mahogany, the playing head is goatskin and the skin is stretched tight using cotton string. The designs on these instruments vary from drum to drum and are engraved into the wood by hand by Wayan, who supervises the production of all DfS djembes. The designs were all created by Balinese primary school children!
